Well your dealer is right but for the wrong reasons. 2 meg simms work fine
in the IIci, but you CAN NOT use them in conjunction with 1 meg simms. The
problem is that the simms in the two banks must be either the same size or
a multiple of four of the other. What this means is that you can use
256k simms in one bank, and anything that is a multiple of four in the
other bank, so like 1 meg simms, 2 meg simms, 4 meg simms, and so on, or
if you use 1 meg simms in one bank, the other bank has to have 4 meg simms
8 meg simms, or 16 meg simms. We have tried the 2 meg in one bank
and the 1 meg in the other bank, and it just won't work.

my suggestion would be to bye the 4-4 meg simms. In the long run you
will probably be better off anyway.

Dear Netters,
I was hoping that some of you might being willing to share your wisdom
and answer three questions I have:
1) 32 bit or not 32 bit. Is there ANY advantage to having 32 bit
addressing on if you dont have more than 8 megabytes of RAM? More
specificially, how about for an LC III? Running speedometer both w/
it on and off showed both modes were overall pretty even, in terms
of speed, w/ display functions a bit faster under 32 bit. So is there
any significant (dis)advantages?
2) Easier ? Does anyone know of any PD clip art of Dolphins? Preferably
in PICT or EPS format.
3) Still easier ? Anyone know if Central Pt. Software has an Email
(bitnet/internet) address?
Thanks.

Dear Netters,
I have yet to receive replies #$%#$^ on abbreviations on the net!
Sounds like an FAQ, yet I haven't the foggiest notion what BTW abbreviates.
FAQ is simple enough, yet when BTW shows up I am at a lost. Could someone
kindly please send me a list of the most popular abbreviations on the net, as
I don't always have access to Internet's FAQ list, nore do I necessarily have
the time do a thorough reading of a 25K text file. Thank you.

Subject: AppleTalk Remote Access to acess Unix host (Q)
I've been reading this Digest lately and noticed that we can use AppleTalk
Remote Access to access UNIX services through a local Mac. Since I'm
looking for some solutions for connecting my Mac at home to access the Unix
server at work, I think that it a good option.
Can somebody fill the the details for me how to achieve this? I assume that
on the remote Mac the Network CP is set to "Remote Only" and the MacTCP CP
is set to "Remote Only". IP address is set manually to "xx.xx.1.3" and
gateway address is set to "xx.xx.1.254". On the local Mac with an ethernet
card installed. The Network CP is set to "EtherTalk" and MacTCP CP is
set to "Ethernet". IP address is "xx.xx.1.6" and Gateway Address is
"xx.xx.1.254". Both Hosts file on each Mac have an entry for the UNIX hosts
with IP address "xx.xx.1.7".
After ARA connection is made on both Mac. I tried to start a telnet session
with my UNIX host using NCSA Telnet. An error message returned saying
"Gateway or Host not responsing". Can anyone give me some hints and tell
me if I did anything wrong?
Thanks

I fairly sure I'm sending this to the wrong address, but could you please post
this to info-mac? I've been working on this problem for a couple of days and
don't seem to be able to work it out...
I've been trying to download Kermit to my mac, via the VAX at Smith College,

information available on line at sumex-aim.stanford.edu) to decode the BinHex
files, it doesn't seem to work. I get error messages: error type 1, or
application not found.
This seems like it's a FAQ, and I don't actually get the digests, so please
reply to me privately if you have an idea as to what it could be that I am
doing wrong (or not doing).

positions things incorrectly (vertically) on the page. Freedom of Press

sure this is a software bug. FoP works great with the 500, but I'd like

Subject: Ehternetlet
If anyone still believes I'm an expert after this tale, I've got some
prime Florida swampland I'd like to sell him or her. Maybe this public
self humiliation/flagellation will help some of y'all. Maybe two of whom
are dumber than I am about the two-headed beast named Macintosh ethernet.
I was major league disappointed with the home ethernetlet yesterday when
backing up Leslye's 200M hard drive from my machine. Three hours later,
about a meg a minute -- localtalk speed, the thing had not only been slow
but also failed. What was the problem? I've generally the same class of
machine at the office, same Retrospect backup program, same TEAC-150 tape
drive. At the time I thought the only difference was that the office
Asante cards had 64K caches and the home FOCUS cards came with 16K. FOCUS
sells a 64K upgrade ($25) for "faster throughput." I trashed around for
too long, as usual. Turned off all extensions not having to do with
networking or backup on Lelsye's machine. No help.
Then a flash of inspiration. No AsantePrint on the office net. I took it
offline, and speed increased a bit. Hmmm. Why's that? Just for the heck
of it, let's read the manual. I had the AsantePrint in the closet between
our two home offices, patched in between two ten-foot runs of thinnet
wire. The manual's sample net shows the AsantePrint at the end of the
string. Redundancy being my middle name (and maybe my job title), I had
ordered one extra of everything having to do with wiring. I replaced the
AsantePrint with an F/F connector, and put it on a new line at the end
of the string. Speeded things up a tad. Maybe 30 percent. Or maybe it was
just my imagination.
There's a plug for 10baseT right there. If everything goes into a central
hub, sequence is unimportant, si?
Backup was still to ruddy slow. I called FOCUS and asked about the 64K
cache upgrade. The tech I spoke with (A different one. Who apparently
didn't recognize my name because he didn't hang up on me) agreed with
the first one that the extra cache would be useless on a netlet. But he
was open minded and took my order, ensuring that I knew the 30-day MBG
was in effect even for people like me who ignored their best advice. If
no improvement, I could send the upgrades back for a full refund.
This morning the real eureka came. I gave up on trying to back up L's
200M in this life (at least until the extra cache memory came) and went
on to her 80M external drive. Retrospect showed it as a dimmed floppy
icon and politely asked me to mount it. Huh?
I finally figured out what was happening. When I took the tape drive off
Leslye's SCSI chain and moved it to mine, I also just moved all the Retro
files. Retrospect was pointed to the actual devices, not to the Retro
Remote on her machine. I had completely bypassed Retro Remote. I didn't
know what I was doing. I reconfigured the Remote to point at both her
hard drives, I edited the backup scripts to point at Remote/Drive instead
of at a drive, and voila! Close to four-meg-a-minute backup speed. Same
as the office. Limited by the tape drive. The 80M backed up in 15 minutes
and the 200 (with compression) did just a tad slower and didn't crash. It
is amazing how well Retrospect Remote works when you actually use it.
The extra ethernet cache memory might still help. I dunno. I do know I'll
be too embarrassed to ask for my money back from FOCUS in any event.
Is there a moral to all this? Don't be stupid? Read the manual? Quit
trying to push the envelope until things are so settled that K-Mart sells
them? Pick one.

Subject: ESCAPE key
Hi!
I sent a somewhat similar message several months ago. I got
some answers but nobody was able to solve my problem. So,
here I am trying again.
I will use an example: I want to use TELNET to consult
CATSCAN, the National Library of Medicine online catalog
system. The CATSCAN software supports VT100 terminal
emulation. When you log in, you are asked to press the ESCAPE
key twice: if you fail to do that, the session is interrupted. Now, I
am using a Mac IIci with an Apple Extended Keyboard II (the
ISO Canadian version), and I am using Kermit 0.99(183),
simulating VT100. The problem is that I am unable to locate the
ESCAPE key on my keyboard. I tried various combinations
(inlcuding control-1, typing '33, etc.) but nothing works. This
means that I cannot use CATSCAN. Has anybody any suggestion?

Reply written offline, so I've combined a few lines from the original
posting.
>>for System 7.2, Apple should have the following Command Key
combinations automatically installed like [..] CMD. M for Alias [..] CMD.
T for empty trash CMD. Z for Undo<<
I'm using sys. 7.0.1* on an LC II and have automated Empty Trash and Make
Alias with MacroMaker (<opt>-T and <opt>-M, respectively, but you can use
any keyboard commands you like). Works like a charm.
There's also a sleeper that I've used for years now: "Close -1." If I've
left too many windows open, the visual clutter begins to annoy me. I
just hit <opt>-Q, which closes all open windows and then reopens the
main, HD window. Amazing how much of a time-saver and convenience that
simple little trick has been.
I've also automated an SE30 using sys. 6.0.7 to select and put away a
floppy disk, using <cmd>-Y. It's actually more convenient than the same
sys. 7 Finder command, although I have to be careful that an external HD
icon isn't occupying the floppy's normal icon space.
Yeh, I know. MacroMaker has its share of detractors, but I'm not one of
them. It's always been just about the handiest utility I have.
>>I'd also like to see Eject removed from the menu. Too many rookie Mac
users get themselves in trouble by using Eject instead of dragging their
disk to the trash. [..] I find it far easier to copy files from one
floppy to another by using the hard disk in between rather than doing the
floppy shuffle.<<
I transfer files between floppies that way, too, but out of necessity,
not preference. "Eject" simply does not work for me with sys. 7.0.1.
Whenever I've tried to use "Eject," a dialog box appears demanding that
the ejected disk be reinserted. This sort of thing doesn't happen with
sys. 6.0.7. Maybe I'm overlooking a step.

Subject: Finder Interface to locate file/folder
Hi, Dear Mac People:
I come up with an idea to improve the interface to locate file/folder
under Finder.
The basic motivation is from the my impatience to always double-clicking
a folder to get access the next level of the folder (location).
Alternative approaches to locate the file:
1) Selecting an object (icon) with option key will bring up pop-up
hierachical menu for all its children, which is the same thing
as Apple Submenu.
2) Selecting an object (icon) with Apple key will bring up a list of
its parents just like as the result when selecting the title of the
folder window with Apple key.
I hope such kind of interface can show up soon to improve "Ease to Use!"
Does anyone there know how to get started for implementing these features
for Finder? (I have been reading IMs and TN, but still do not know how
I can get access the icon location and associated file/fodler!) Is there
any where I can find more information about DeskTop Database file??
Thanks for all your help! All your hints/suggestions are welcome!

Yes, I use AppleEvents to trigger pre-written scripts and it works quite
well. I use the Send command with reply and without reply. One command does
all that I need. There is an AppleEvents example stack floating around and
it has enough sample scripts to get HyperCard on one Mac talking to

Subject: LC III upg & 7.1 (Q&C)
Well, after 5 weeks of waiting for CompUSA to get their act togther, I
have upgraded my LC to a brand new LC III! :) The upgrade kit itself is
actually an entire LC III without a hard drive or any SIMMs. System 7.1
DOES come in the kit, however I don't see WorldScript anyplace (not
that I need it). It also comes with the Apple Resource Guide (warranty,
etc.), Getting Started With Your Macintosh LC III, and the Macintosh
User's Guide for desktop Macintosh computers. So, now I've got my new
Mac, turned up the colors to 32k :) and everything seems a bit faster
(haven't really used any progs yet). My FPU and RAM should be here
later this week. Now, here are my questions:
* What are some incompatability problems with software and the LC III/7.1?
* No docs for 7.1 came with it, so besides the Fonts folder and some
new control panels, what is different?
* Can sounds be kept in the Fonts folder?
* Can the PostScript 'extensions' be kept in the Fonts folder?
* Can you recommend some pics/movies that show off the difference between
8 and 16-bit color?
* How hard is it to install the FPU? (Yes, I see the socket. :)
* Does anyone have a nice 'puffy-grey' icon for the Fonts folder?
(just the letter 'A' on the icon would be appreciated, as I am
lousy with the lasso)
* What's with the start-up sound?
Anything you think I should know, please tell me. :) I just don't want to
have any unpleasant surprises.
Thanks!
Next stop, PowerPC.

Subject: MacsBug on Centris 610 (Q)
Hi Folks!
We just got a new Centris 610, and I am in the
process of beta testing some software. I can't get MacsBug to
work on the Centris. Even when I use System 7.1 straight off the
floppies, with MacsBug version 6.2.2 and Programmer's Key 1.4.2,
(the latest), no crashes are intercepted by MacsBug. Furthermore, the
Programmers's Key just causes the system, including the mouse, to hang
when accessed through option-PowerOn or the interrupt key. Otherwise,
we've had no problems with the machine. The copies of MacsBug and the
Programmer'sKey work fine on my Mac IIci running System 7.0.1*.
MacsBug is located in the system folder, and the Programmer'sKey is in
the extensions folder, as they should be.
Any hints would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Harald Herchen

Subject: MacSecure, Menu Master Mac, At Ease
Someone was looking for a program called MacSecure earlier. This is a Finder-
replacement program for security purposes. It has a fairly rigid interface,
but
it does seem to provide security. At Ease's interface is much more flexible
and
intuitive, but lacks the security.
A better solution is Menu Master Mac, a wonderful Finder-like replacement. It
provides excellent security, a true Finder-like interface (you get to build
the displays any way you want for EACH user), and it is very smart when
working on a network. If you update one computer on the network, all other
copies of Menu Master Mac are automatically updated. It is so flexible that
a list of its features would be impossible here. If you are considering
a Finder-replacement/security program, you owe yourself a look at Menu
Master Mac.
Contact Electronic Learning Systems at (904) 375-0558. A new version was just
released a couple of months ago with major new features. You'll like it -
and I've already seen test versions of some upcoming updates which are
really amazing! $99 - single user, multiple user packs and site licenses are
available at better prices than MacSecure. Several large school systems use
this to manage their students's computer use (it generates user logs, amount
of time in each application, and many other reports). It also can limit the
amount of daily time on the computer and the number of pages that can be
printed.
One disclaimer: I was hired to write the manual for Menu Master Mac. However,
I reviewed most of the other programs like it and believe I would come to
the same conclusion in any feature comparison.

^^^^^^^^
I don't know why local talk fails to show up, but I don't think that it is
an enabler problem. I think that it is a duplicate MacTCP address problem.
The system administrator and I puzzled over this problem one night a few
weeks back.
It seems that a helper had copied over the system folder from one
machine to a couple of crashed machines, and hadn't reconfigured the
addresses. When we changed the address to a different unsed one, and pinged
the old address, a machine answered. With thirty mac in the lab, it was
lots fun tracking down the duplicate machine. When we fixed one machine, we
discovered that a second one also had the same address.
Solution: MacTCP doesn't like having another machine with the same address
on the network. Don't copy MacTCP from machine to machine without
configuring the address.

Subject: monitor and printer gremlins (Q)
I recently developed 2 problems for which I can't find a cause:
1. My 13" Apple RGB monitor will not hold its color settings. If I set
the screen color to blue it changes to green the next time I start up, and
sometimes when I close an application.
2. My StyleWriter suddenly stops printing in the middle of a document and
the message "StyleWriter not ready..." appears.
I have turned off INITs, checked for viruses with latest Disinfectant,
removed the preferences folder, zapped the PRAM, and even re-installed the
system software to no avail.
Running system 7.0 with tune-up 1.1.1, StyleWriter 7.2.2 on a IIci.
The printer works fine when hooked up to my PowerBook.
Any explanations, or conjectures, on what is causing these problems would
be most welcome. An e-mail reply would be greatle appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: Need OOP Advice
Need OOP advice
I am a semi-experienced programmer, looking to get into application
program on the Macintosh. I have had some experience programming in a
variety of languages and environments (Primarily FoxBASE+ and FoxPro),
but have never done much development on the Macintosh outside of
FoxBASE+ and HyperCard.
Think Pascal and Think C both seem like overly complex sledgehammers to
me. Right now my attention if focused on using an high-level OOP
environment like FutureBASIC, PG:PRO, or Prograph.
I am looking for feedback/comments/advice/recommendations for users of
the above mentioned products or similar environments (or convincing
arguments why I should use Think C or Pascal).
Areas I am particularly interested in are:
1. I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel as far as handling
windows, dialogs, menus, or other onscreen elements. I want to spend my
time working on the algorithms, not the interface.
2. Ability to create clean, well behaved executables (i.e. 32-bit clean,
VM and 040 cache compatible, support for AppleEvents.Balloon Help, etc.)
Ability to create CDEF, CODE, XCMD resources would be a nice extra, but
not essential.
3. A reasonable level of performance. Obviously I don't expect assembly
language speed, but definitely better than HyperCard.
4. One day I might like to port my applications over to another
Operating System, like Windows, PowerOpen or Taligent Pink. This falls
into the nice but not essential category. I would probably be willing
to trade this feature for increased ease of use.
If there is significant response, I will share my findings with the
net.

Subject: Obscure bug in 7.0.1 Tuneup
Hi,
I've just come across an 'undocumented feature' in system 7. It goes like
this:
My hard disk died (big time - nothing but ashes) (but it's sorted now !)
and I was using Volume recover on Norton to try and get as much back as
possible. I recovered to my other disk, and of course Norton plonks as
much as it can into one directory. So there I am, with a nice folder
on my 'recovered to' disk, with about 3,500 file entries in it (big
hard disk). Now here's the bug: Rather than wait for the finder to cache
3,500 icons, I chose View by name (type/date/size acts the same) and
let the finder get on with sorting my files out. It took a while.
When the list came up, there was no vertical scroll bar.
The only way to get a scrollbar to appear was to select one item that
was on the screen, and use the arrow keys to move down off the
current window. When the list went up (bottom of the window), the vertical
scrollbar appeared, as it should have done to start. Why is this. The only
thing I can think of is that the finder ran out of memory, coping with
all those files in one directory on show at once, and 'forgot' to
put up the scroll bar after displaying the visible selection. Does
anyone have any other suggestions as to why ? (Hmm, maybe this should
be changed in 7.2 ... :-) )

wondering if anyone out there could help with the symptoms. The monitor
starts just fine and after it "warms up" about 20-30 minutes (in a 20 C

it). If I turn it off and wait a while, it turns on again just fine --
until it heats up again. I believe this is due to some thermal protection
circutry going on the blink. Is there anyone else out there that has
tackled this problem and come up with a hack? I should add that this
problem also occurred when I first bought the monitor when I used it in a
very warm room -- hence the conclusion about heat problems. Thanks for any

haven't experienced any problems with it before. When I try to print, I get

try to print something from another program there is no problem however. It
makes no difference whether background printing is on or not.
I have an SE/30, System 7.1, 4 Meg RAM + 2 Meg Virtual. Shutting off my

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Any suggestions on how to get
